Researchers with Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute have an additional right whale mom and calf sighting right off the coast of Georgia.
The mother, Horton, and the calf were seen Thursday east of St. Catherine’s Island.
This is her third documented calf. And Horton is now estimated to be over 21 years old.
She was first seen in 2003, researchers said.
In late November, researchers saw the first right whale mom and calf pair of the 2023-24 season off the coast of South Carolina.
That pair consisted of the mother, Juno (Catalog #1612), estimated to be over 38 years old, who had successfully given birth to her eighth documented calf, researchers said.
