New York Mets Sign All-star Infielder

The New York Mets have added more infield depth. As the team announced on Tuesday, veteran infielder Jose Iglesias has been signed to a minor league contract with an invite with big-league camp in spring training.

Iglesias, 33, is a natural shortstop, who has stuck around his career because of his defense. In his 11-year big-league career, he has played for the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles, Los Angeles Angels and Colorado Rockies.

Iglesias did not appear in the majors last season, but played in 118 games for the Rockies in 2022, slashing a productive .292/.328/.380 with three home runs and 47 RBI.

The Mets have a full infield with Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, Joey Wendle, Brett Baty, Mark Vientos and Ronny Mauricio. Iglesias will be fighting for a spot during spring training, but will more than likely be used as infield depth in Triple-A Syracuse.

Iglesias was runner up for AL Rookie of the Year in 2011 and was an All-Star in 2015.
