US Coast Guard returns illegal migrants to The Bahamas

Twenty illegal migrants were handed over to Bahamian immigration officials after they were intercepted on their way to the United States.

The US Coast Guard said it intercepted the migrants, who began their voyage in The Bahamas, over a four-day period.

The Coast Guard said it has stopped 761 Cubans and 4,613 Haitian migrants since October 1, 2022.

Missions to stop illegal migrants from entering the US via neighbouring islands continues as the Coast Guard said it will be deploying its air and sea assets to detect and deter smuggling operations.

Lieutenant Travis Poulos, Coast Guard District Seven, commented: “The Coast Guard, in close collaboration with our partners, successfully completed more interdictions this past week resulting in a safe repatriation of migrants.

“These successful missions exemplify the importance of our strong cooperation and joint efforts in ensuring maritime security and addressing the preservation of life at sea in the region.”

The migrants will be processed in The Bahamas and before their deportation to their homeland.
