Irakli Beraia, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Defence and Security Committee, on Tuesday said Georgia’s place was in NATO, and further noted membership in the bloc was important “more than ever” for the country.
In his remarks over the matter, Beraia noted it was “important” to increase the role of the alliance in strengthening the country’s security.
Our main point in Brussels was that Georgia’s place is in NATO, and today, more than ever, it is important for Georgia to be a member of NATO, to increase the role of the alliance in strengthening Georgia’s security”, he said in reference to the visit of a parliamentary delegation from the country to the NATO headquarters last week.
Beraia added the “unanimity” of the bloc’s allies in supporting Georgia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and Euro-Atlantic integration had been “once again shown” during the visit of the delegation.
“Our country is committed to the principles of the Washington Treaty”, the official also pointed out, and stressed the country had “long acted as a responsible [partner]” and had “done much more” for Euro-Atlantic security than “some allies”.
